Acts of Remembrance
For the week of April 27 through May 1, VIU has agreed to fly CUPE Day of Mourning flags at the Nanaimo, Cowichan and Powell River campuses. On April 28, these flags will be lowered to half-staff in honor of those who were killed at work.
VIU will be holding its Nanaimo ceremonies at 12noon on Tuesday, April 28 in front of the Jardin des Quatorze located on the east side of Building 360 (Chemistry). Local ceremonies sponsored by the BC Federation of Labour will also be taking place in Cowichan, Parksville and Powell River. We encourage you to attend and recognize this important day.
Stats

· 173 workers died – 4 were young workers (aged 24 and below) and 3 were CUPE members.
· 98 workers died due to occupational disease.
On average in BC:
· More than 2,800 claims are reported each week.
· 23 long-term disability claims are accepted every working day.
· 3 work-related death claims are accepted each week.
In Canada in 2013:
· 902 workers died – that’s 2.47 deaths every day.

On May 3rd we are doing it again!!
This will be the 3rd annual CUPE Cares event
Please join us by submitting your name to me for another Garbage clean up. We have three trucks lined up and a group volunteers - but we can always use more!
We will muster in the Lot A parking lot and split up similar to last year, and return for a BBQ just after noon. If you have your black CUPE Cares t-shirt from last year, it’s time to re-use it. If you don’t have one tell me your t-shirt size and we will get you one.
Maps will be provided, I have contacted the dump and arranged for free dumping again, we'll have a tent set up for water and coffee and light goodies. Please join us - last year we were the talk of the provincial post-secondary sector. In two years we have taken down over 7 tonnes of debris!
Thanks Sisters and Brothers. Together we make a difference!

CUPE Cares - 2nd Annual Clean up the Mountain May 4, 2013

The 2nd annual Cupe Cares Event went off on May 4th without a hitch. The support staff, a few administrators from Vancouver Island University and the helpful crew from Nanaimo Sheet Metal managed to pull out 2820 kilograms of garbage after 13 truckloads went through the Regional Districts Land Fill.
Organizer and 2nd Vice President of local 1858 Rob Campbell said it turned into a beautiful day, helping the team to make a small part of Mount Benson an even more beautiful sight.
"With 31 people and 6 trucks, we did Mother Nature proud today", said Campbell.
Special thanks go out to Maude Mackey from the Regional Distract for waiving the dump fee for this volunteer action, and to the enthusiastic crew from Nanaimo Sheet Metal who brought trucks and willing hands to help with the effort.
In late April of 2012, 3000 kilograms of refuse was taken down to the landfill
“This has turned into an annual thing, for sure.” said Rob.
Stay tuned for next year's event, we'd love to see more volunteers be a part of the CUPE Cares team!

Wills and Estate Planning Seminar - August 2012

Did you know that the laws regarding representation changed a year ago and that the laws regarding wills change this September? Come out for a seminar to be taught by Rod Mont a lawyer at Island Law, Nanaimo. Having a properly prepared will, Power of Attorney, or representation can save a lot of heartbreak and expense when needed. Rod has generously volunteered his time to CUPE and is offering a door prize of a simple will preparation for either a single person or a couple! (for a couple, this has a value of approximately $450).
22nd Annual Labour Day Picnic - September 2012

CUPE Cares Cleans up the Mountain - March 24, 2012

More than 40 CUPE members met up to clean up Mount Benson. Considering what the job entailed, spirits were high and the day went well. We managed to clean up over 6000 lbs. of garbage from the mountain roads. After we finished for the day there was a great bbq for all who helped out! Thanks to Rolanda Murray for suggesting the clean up for our first CUPE Cares event. See more pictures of the day in the Photo Gallery.

CUPE 1858 Summer BBQ - July 23, 2011

We had a nice family BBQ with lots of yummy food and games for kids young and old. The wee little ones enjoyed the park, crafts and the bouncy castle while the grown-ups played lots of super fun games. We had sack races, three legged races and water balloon toss. Thanks so much to committee that planned this fantastic event; Stephanie Didsbury, Josephine Chong, Shannon McKenzie, Deidre Godwin and Marg Purslow. Check out the Photo Gallery for photos.
