CUPE Local 1858 is involved in many events and meetings throughout the year. Check out other sections under this tab for more information about upcoming meetings, events and activities that you can get involved in.
General Meetings
General Meetings (GM) are held each month during the academic year (September - June) with no meetings being held in July or August. These meetings have three main purposes:
GMs alternate throughout the year between lunch meetings and evening meetings. The purpose for alternating meetings is to provide as much opportunity for members to attend and participate as possible taking into account the variety of work schedules and multiple work locations of the Local's members. Due to logistics, lunch meetings are primarily informational and typically held in Nanaimo. With the assistance of campus reps in Cowichan and Powell River, evening meetings are held via video conference. These are full business meetings and include the majority of elections, motions, etc. for the Local.
The dates and locations of GMs can be found under this tab by clicking on "Meetings".
Note: the deadline for submitting business items for a GM is 4pm on the 1st Monday of the month of the meeting. Exceptions to the deadline are made only by approval of the Executive.
Annual General Meetings
An Annual General Meeting (AGM) is held each year on the 2nd Wednesday in December. This meeting is when the regular elections of union officers takes place and is also when the annual CUPE Cares Service Awards are presented. Elections are held as follows:
Special Membership Meetings
Special Membership Meetings may be called at any point if there is union business that is either urgent or is better handled through a separate meeting. These meetings are only called on an as-needed basis and have specific agendas to which other business is not added.
General Meetings (GM) are held each month during the academic year (September - June) with no meetings being held in July or August. These meetings have three main purposes:
- To conduct the business of the union - CUPE and our Local are a democratically run organizations with elected representatives. Members direct the way the Local functions through discussion and voting on business items including the passing of an annual budget.
- To elect representatives of the union - neither the legally required business of the union, nor the social activities occur without members stepping up to run for positions as union officers (Executive and Trustees) and committee representatives. Members elect these representatives at membership meetings.
- To communicate and educate - GMs are the easiest opportunity for members to learn about the work their representatives have been doing on their behalf.
